No generally-accepted definition of “design” exists, and the term has different connotations in different fields (see design disciplines below). Informally, “a design” (noun) refers to a plan for the construction of an object (as in architectural blueprints, circuit diagrams and sewing patterns) and “to design” (verb) refers to making this plan. However, one can also design by directly constructing an object (as in pottery, cowboy coding and graphic design). More formally, design has been defined as follows.
Here, a "specification" can be manifested as either a plan or a finished product and "primitives" are the elements from which the design object is composed. With such a broad denotation, there is no universal language or unifying institution for designers of all disciplines. This allows for many differing philosophies and approaches toward the subject (see Philosophies and studies of design, below). The person designing is called a designer, which is also a term used for people who work professionally in one of the various design areas, usually also specifying which area is being dealt with (such as a fashion designer, concept designer or web designer). A designer’s sequence of activities is called a design process. The scientific study of design is called design science . Designing often necessitates considering the aesthetic, functional, economic and sociopolitical dimensions of both the design object and design process. It may involve considerable research, thought, modeling, interactive adjustment, and re-design. Meanwhile, diverse kinds of objects may be designed, including clothing, graphical user interfaces, skyscrapers, corporate identities, business processes and even methods of designing. GNU Free Documentation License What major would video game design and computer graphic design be listed under? Q. Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this, but I don't know a better place. What would that major be considered? I want to get into video game design, animation, and computer graphic design, but I'm not sure what the proper term for that is called. Can someone please help me out? Thanks! Asked by SynRocker - Sun Aug 17 17:24:33 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. Along with everyone else - it's random. Depending on where you go - it is different things. For what you want look at colleges like Fullsail in Florida, some of the Art Institutes, and Art Center in California. Make sure they have 3D modeling and programming. Be careful with programs that are just "digital design" and stuff like that. These programs can be so random in what they teach you that you won't learn enough to get into game design. (I know this from being at University of Cincinnati with Digital Design majors who have not gotten enough 3D modeling to do what they were told they would be able to.) Start looking at portfolios of some game companies you like and see what they require for an entry level position. Usually they are… [cont.] Answered by kitkatherine - Thu Aug 21 10:19:17 2008 What is the difference between design theory of evolution and intelligent design? Q. I know that intelligent design is the theological aspect of evolution, but that there is also another theory called "design theory." How does this theory work without using God as an explanation? Thank you!!! Asked by Yoni - Sun Mar 23 21:22:07 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Design theory is just another name for Intelligent Design. Intelligent Design is not so much a 'theory', as a set of questions posed to evolution. I.e. it questions whether Darwininan theory of evolution by natural selection is sufficient to explain various features we find in biology ... but it doesn't actually offer much in the way of an alternative explanation of these features. In fairness, these are often very good questions. Questions about complexity, information, the emergence of hierarchy, etc. But: 1. A set of questions is not a theory. A theory needs to *explain* something ... describe it in terms of something simpler. Asking questions to dispute evolution doesn't offer an alternative explanation. Q. I would like to design a small house with a light bulb or other heating device that is powered off solar energy and has thermostat controlled. Any idea on the type of thermostat to use? Any help finding a resource for such a design? Of course I'd like to bring the cat in, but she is a ferrel cat and is FIV+. I already have two indoor cats, so infecting them is not an option. Also, she is wild (ferrel) and won't adapt well to the indoors. Asked by Bec - Mon Dec 31 22:27:33 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. It sounds like a unique and novel idea...but may I ask if it would not just be more simple to make the outdoor cat into an indoor cat and keep him safe and warm in your home? Did you know that, in addition to the cold, your outdoor cat faces many hazards? It can get hit by a car, attacked by other cats, dogs or wild animals, be poisoned, fall victim to cruel humans who torture helpless animals, get lost, contract diseases (that it brings home to you), become infested with parasites (which it can also bring home to you), it can caught in traps set for other animals and may become injured or suffer before being released, and - if not spayed or neutered - can contribute to the overpopulation of feral/homeless cats.
