What is the criteria for a condition to be labeled a mental illness?
Q. I am researching MPD/DID and I am wondering what exactly are the scientific criteria for something being listed as a mental illness. Please state your sources. Thank you all in advance.

A. Em, I'm going to go to Forensic Psychology Thur. 1:00 - 2:15 I'll find out for you... Ok I asked my professor and he said, there isn't one. The definition varies from state to state but there is a legal definition for Insanity but not mental illness. There are so many conditions that can influence mental illness... mental disorder, addiction, neurological damage... He gave examples

A. The criteria used to evaluate education for women was simply that women were considered intellectually inferior to men, and therefore their education was restricted to domestic and maternal tasks. Those ideas evolved as women began to be seen to be as capable as men in every way apart from physical strength, and as women began to play a growing part in society, particularly from the Victorian era onwards, through the Crimean and African wars to the 1st and 2nd World Wars. And now, my sister and my wife BOTH consider themselves better than me!
