An engine is a mechanical device that produces some form of output from a given input. An engine whose purpose is to produce kinetic energy output from a fuel source is called a prime mover; alternatively, a motor is a device which produces kinetic energy from other forms of energy (such as electricity, a flow of hydraulic fluid or compressed air).

A motor car (automobile) has a starter motor and motors to drive pumps (fuel, power steering, etc) – but the power plant that propels the car is called an engine. The term 'motor' was originally used to distinguish the new internal combustion engine -powered vehicles from earlier vehicles powered by a steam engine (as in steam roller and motor roller).

Military engines included siege engines, large catapults, trebuchets and battering rams.

How to remove engine oil out of my swimming pool?
Q. I just opened my swimming pool, and there was engine oil in one of the bottles which should have had pool chemicals in it. I did not realize it was engine oil until i started putting it into my pool. Any ideas on how to clear the oil out of my pool? Thanks.
Asked by KingPin - Sat Jul 5 16:54:11 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. For a start I would not put in any chemicals which break down the oil. That may be ok for an oilspill in the sea, but definitely not where you are going to swim. (Reason in moving water, large quantity to break down the remains and dilute it - in your swimming pool, the residue from the break down has nowhere to go but in your pool)] Next, try and get some sponge and wrap it around a length of rope bit longer than the width of the pool. Get someone to assist you and drag this the length of the pool. You will probably have to wring the sponge out quite regularly.

What more powerful engine would be easiest to install into a Mitsubishi Mirage?
Q. I have a '94 Mitsubishi Mirage and the engine is on its way out, but I want to keep the car. What other cars engines wouldn't be too hard to put into into my Mirage? So I know where to start looking. I don't know too much about cars but I'm learning. Any help would be appriciated. Thanks.

A. There will not be any "easy" conversions for this car. Your best bet is to replace with an OEM style unit.

How is the generator connected to the jet engine in a passenger jet?
Q. I know that in some systems, the engine drives a hydraulic pump that then drives a hydraulic uh... "motor" that turns the generator, but can you please explain this to me in more detail? I especially can't understand how the hydraulic pump is connected to the engine - is it connected to the shaft in the middle of the engine (the one that connects the compressor and turbine blades)? If so, how? Doesn't it turn at tens of thousands of RPM? This is really my question - in a nutshell, how do you connect a generator or pump to a jet engine?

A. Good responses above. Not all engines include constant speed drives (CSDs) however. Some engines drive the generator directly and use a voltage regulator to maintain proper power to the aircraft. In this case, the gearbox is driven by a bevel gear on the HP shaft through a smaller, perpendicular, accessory drive shaft to an external gearbox, which then uses a series of bevel and spur gears to reduce the speed by roughly an order of magnitude to several accessories, including a starter/generator, hydraulic pump, oil pump, fuel control, etc. By the time the speed reduction occurs, there is not much difference between flight idle and max speed at the generator pad, so a CSD is just added weight for little justification.
