An engine is a mechanical device that produces some form of output from a given input. When the purpose of an engine is to produce mechanical power from a fuel source it is referred to as a prime mover; alternatively, a motor is a device which produces mechanical power from other forms of energy (such as electricity, a flow of hydraulic fluid, or compressed air). An automobile makes use of several motors to start the car and drive the car's various pumps (fuel, power steering, etc) – but the power plant that propels the car is called an engine. The term 'motor' was originally used to distinguish the new internal combustion engine -powered vehicles from earlier vehicles powered by a steam engine (as in steam roller and motor roller).

Military engines included siege engines, large catapults, trebuchets and battering rams.

How to get search engines to search based on number of hits rather than tags/keywords?
Q. Is there a search engine that does that? Customized search engines only let you choose your keywords, what if I wanted to search for a popular blog or something? I want to search for popular sites with the same keyword, how do i do that?

What are some good books on how car engines work?
Q. Also, what are a few good websites that have information on car engines? Thanks.

A. Depends how much information you want. You can get textbooks and learn about the mechanical properties of the metals and the thermodynamics going in the motor. You can get an automotive engineering book that gives you the needed information and formulas for an engine. I have a copy of it somewhere but you'd need some basic engineering knowledge to understand it. Much less I don't know anyone besides an engineer who would want that book. lol Here's an Auto Engineering textbook I found. There is also a good webpage in the link below that has some good articles about how engines work. They actually haev a lot of articles about automobiles.

Where on the net can I find out about fixing engines or the way a combustion engine runs?
Q. I want to learn how to work on engines and how they work. I have looked up small engine mechanics and engine mechanics along with a few other things. I am looking for a web site or information site that will teach me about the way a combustion engine works. I keep finding schools that offer a degree but that is not what I want. If you answer the question will you make sure that the site is an information site and not a selling site.

A. What you're looking for isn't going to be on the net. You need to get a book. If you go to a parts store sometimes they have rebuilding books and something like that might help you. The best book on the topic is Internal Combustion Fundamentals by Heywood, and is an excellent source if you're looking for hard core information. The basics for how a combustion engine works might be found on Wikipedia, but I haven't confirmed that. Just type "internal combustion engine" in the search box.
