A kitchen is a room or part of a room used for cooking and food preparation.

In the West, a modern residential kitchen is typically equipped with a stove, a sink with hot and cold running water, a refrigerator and kitchen cabinets arranged according to a modular design. Many households have a microwave oven, a dishwasher and other electric appliances. The main function of a kitchen is cooking or preparing food but it may also be used for dining and entertaining.

History

The evolution of the kitchen is linked to the invention of the cooking range or stove and the development of water infrastructure capable of supplying water to private homes. Until the 18th century, food was cooked over an open fire. Technical advances in heating food in the 18th and 19th centuries, changed the architecture of the kitchen. Before the advent of modern pipes, water was brought from an outdoor source such as wells, pumps or springs.

In my kitchen I have to cook food, I want to make automatic exhaust fan when kitchen fill with smoke?
Q. Regarding to above question, while cooking food I have to on/off exhaust fan manually but I want to have fully automatic circuit to controller the exhaust fan. When my kitchen get smoke (from burnt oil, burnt chilly etc.) the exhaust fan automatic on for five (5) minutes then off after 5 minutes. Could any body provide me the circuit diagram with parts list. I will be very grateful with you. Thank you very much for your cooperation in advance.

A. Although it sounds like a good idea it does have one drawback that you should consider. If the smoke is caused by a real fire you would NOT want the exhaust fan to come on automatically. I don't know of any device that is made that will do what you want. I suspect you could modify a smoke detector so that it would activate a relay rather than the alarm. This would require determining the voltage and current available from the alarm buzzer circuit. You would need to find a relay that could work using that available power. It would probably require some desoldering and soldering to connect the smoke alarm to the relay. You may be able to find a time delay relay that will work off the available power from the alarm circuit. If not… [cont.]

How do I keep my kitchen from getting greasy?
Q. My girlfriend and I just moved into a new apartment, and it's great, especially the kitchen. The only thing is, that since it is in an older building, the kitchen does not have a grease fan. Our old place had this same issue, and often, there would be a film of grease on everything, especially if we cooked a lot. We are almost afraid to cook in our new kitchen for fear of this problem. Is there a way to prevent this from happenning, in that cleaning off this grease is very dificult and time consuming.

A. Buy one of those splatter shields for skillets. Those will help cut down on the amount of splatters when you cook. Also, use cleaning products that contain orange extract, as that is a wonderful natural degreaser for cleaning!

What assortment of kitchen knives should a person get to set up the kitchen properly?
Q. My brother would like to set up his kitchen knife assortment in a practical way and needs a list of what different types of knives he should purchase.

A. Don't buy a set, you will get more than one knife that is pretty much useless for you or him. make your own set, it'll be cheaper and better knives too. The minimum set which covers 99% of home cutting is: 3-4" paring/peeling knife; 6-12" chef's knife 8-12in serrated bread slicer. You can add boning knife if you work with bony meat, poultry. BTW, boning knives are not the same as meat cleavers, i.e. not designed to chop through the bones, but to work around them. Now what you should avoid, i.e. most common knife myths and marketing BS. Forged vs. stamped - As knife marketing tells us good kitchen knives have to be forged, and have full bolster and tang. NONE of that is true. E.g. Stamped Globals are much better performers than most… [cont.]
