A broad definition of a tool is an entity used to interface between two or more domains that facilitates more effective action of one domain upon the other. The most basic tools are simple machines. For example, a crowbar simply functions as a lever. The further out from the pivot point, the more force is transmitted along the lever. A hammer typically interfaces between the operator's hand and the nail the operator wishes to strike.

Tools are the most important items that the ancient humans used to climb to the top of the food chain; by inventing tools, they were able to accomplish tasks that their bodies could not, such as using a spear or bow and arrow to kill prey, since their teeth were not sharp enough to pierce many animals' skins.

A telephone is a communication tool that interfaces between two people engaged in conversation at one level. And between each user and the communication network at another. It is in the domain of media and communications technology that a counter-intuitive aspect of our relationships with our tools first began to gain popular recognition. Marshall McLuhan famously said "We shape our tools. And then our tools shape us." McLuhan was referring to the fact that our social practices co-evolve with our use of new tools and the refinements we make to existing tools.

Tools that have evolved for use in particular domains can be given different assignations. For example, tools designed for domestic use are often called utensils.

Observation has confirmed that that multiple species can use tools, including monkeys, apes, several birds, and sea otters. Philosophers originally thought that only humans had the ability to make tools, until zoologists observed birds and monkeys making tools. Now humans' unique relationship to tools is considered to be that we are the only species that uses tools to make other tools.

Most anthropologists believe that the use of tools was an important step in the evolution of mankind. Humans evolved an opposable thumb — useful in holding tools — and increased dramatically in intelligence, which aided in the use of tools.

What tools and materials do you need to grow a cucumber?
Q. What kind of materials and tools do I need to grow a cucumber? Shovels?

A. you dont need any tools to grow cucumbers i grow mine in pots, and very successfully too plant seeds, and water its as simple as that not growing or planting season here just now though dont know about where you are once the plant is growing, about 10" you need to support them as they grow quite tall and have heavy fruits, but i just plant them against a fence and tie them onto that, they are not difficult to grow, you can plant in the ground and you would need to dig over the soil, but again, simple too do, if you dont have a pot to plant in and want to plant in the ground, borrow a shovel expensive to buy just to plant cucumbers

What tools do I need to build a float for a parade?
Q. Assuming the larger mechanical pieces are already in place and I have something of a moving blank slate platform, what do I do next? What materials, tools and supplies will I need to make something basic?
Asked by Vern Masterson - Thu Jul 10 23:13:46 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. this is going to depend on what you are going to do for your float. Chicken wire is great for making forms, then you can paper mache over them. Insulation foam boards are good for things that are more structured and then you can carve that with various cutting tools.

What are the essential tools and supplies I need to start building golf clubs?
Q. Hello, I really want to get into club building but I'm overwhelmed by the amount of tools and equipment available. What are the essential things that I need? I'd like to start by building a driver, a putter, and a couple of wedges. Is someone willing to make me a list of what REALLY is essential to get started? I have a lot of basic tools but I know there are some specific things that I need to purchase. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! John

A. What a reply from him! At a minimum you will need a cheap rubber shaft holder, a vise, a razor knife, 30/60 shaft epoxy, ferrules for the size shaft you are using, a fine tooth hacksaw, medium sandpaper, grip tape and grip solvent. I use spray brake parts cleaner for grip solvent as it leaves no residue, dries fast and is cheap. Take a look at golfsmith.com/clubmaking or /tools. Good luck, have fun and make sure to measure yourself to fit them properly. There are many measurement charts around. Do a search. Golfsmith has a club making forum that has a few on there.
